CEOs don’t walk away because of the salary. They walk away when the board isn’t aligned

CEOs springen nicht wegen des Gehalts ab. Aber wegen fehlender Klarheit im Board

I recently sat down with a CEO candidate after a final interview.
Profile, experience and motivation all fitted.

Yet he was hesitant.

He said, calmly:
“I’ve had three conversations and heard three different priorities. I still don’t know what this role really stands for.”

The advisory board talked about profitability.
The CEO about culture.
Another stakeholder about possible portfolio changes.

For a C-level candidate, that isn’t a detail.
It’s a signal.

Top executives listen very carefully in these conversations. They aren’t just examining the role. They’re examining the leadership system.

If strategic priorities aren’t consistent, one question comes up immediately:
where will the fights happen later?

In transformation mandates, we therefore clarify three points before the first candidate even walks into the room:

1. What story does the board tell about the next 24 months?

2. What is non-negotiable in the first twelve months?

3. Where are the tensions in the leadership system?

That clarity often decides whether a top executive builds trust.

A CEO never chooses just a role.
They choose the system behind it.

What do you think:
what’s the quickest way for a candidate to tell, in conversation, whether a board is really aligned?

Let’s talk about your situation.

In confidence, directly with a partner and without delegation.
