The market mood is more uncertain than it has been for a long time. Too many decisions keep getting pushed back, and budgets are still largely frozen.
But what preoccupies me most after more than 20 years in this business is that companies “manage” their wrong appointments instead of fixing them.
A CEO or managing director is in post and clearly isn’t delivering the turnaround. But instead of pulling the plug, everyone waits. “Who knows what next year will bring? The risk is too high for us right now.”
Frankly, I think that’s a dangerous kind of paralysis.
In a crisis above all, the quality of your leadership team decides your company’s future.
Keep the wrong people in key positions out of fear, and you lose years you’ll never get back.
Executive search was born a century ago out of pure entrepreneurial courage. And that’s exactly the courage boardrooms need again now.
P.S. A piece of industry history: executive search emerged in the 1920s, against the backdrop of the Great Depression, from the realisation that crises aren’t solved by waiting, only by putting the most capable people in charge. That’s exactly where we find ourselves again today.
